ANEW housing development in Bishop’s Cleeve has reached the early stages of development. Thirty new homes will be built in the area as part of the £3.5 million Cleevelands scheme.

The project will aim to incorporate a mixture of affordable rent and shared ownership properties, delivered on behalf of Rooftop Housing Group by local contractor Speller Metcalfe.

The scheme has been approved by Tewkesbury Borough Council and is funded through Homes England. The new development will aim to help meet the growing demand for affordable housing for both rent and low-cost homes ownership.

Recent studies by the National Housing Federation suggest that 90,000 affordable homes for rent are needed annually, with the Cleevelands project part of Rooftop’s plan to deliver 1,000 homes by 2023.

Part of Rooftop’s “Building Great Homes” plan, each home is designed to the Rooftop Living Homes Standard, which aims to promote good design and environmental sustainability.

The plan also involves using renewable energy to “create warm, energy and future-proof homes” for residents, with rainwater harvesting, compost bins and cycle areas.

David Hannon, development director at Rooftop Housing Group, said: “Our commitment and work in Bishop’s Cleeve continues with this great project, one that we can be truly proud of.

“We are working in strange times and to see new homes being built to support the economic recovery by bringing employment and opportunities for local suppliers is fantastic. And let us not forget we are bringing homes to people who need them.”

Mark Eaton, living manager at Speller Metcalfe, said: “Speller Metcalfe has a long history of successful delivery in partnership with Rooftop Housing Group and we are proud to deliver a scheme that will provide benefits right across the community.

“As a local contractor we know there is a high demand for housing throughout Gloucestershire, and this scheme will provide affordable options to both buyers and renters within their existing communities where they may already have established links through schools, work, families, friends and other activities.”

The scheme is expected to be finished in autumn 2021.
