SCHOOLCHILDREN were caught on CCTV vandalising a wildlife conservation area in the Cotswolds.

Police were called to Greystones nature reserve in Bourton-on-thewater and were able to see the damage was carried out by secondary school pupils.

Police approached The Cotswold School and with its help, was able to identify those who were responsible.

The damage at Greystones, an Iron Age settlement, was estimated to be £1,000.

The area that was vandalised is frequently used by the public who walk near the surrounding fields and lake at the conservation area.

And there are concerns in the town about the growing problem of antisocial behaviour.

Councillor Paul Hodgkinson, (Lib Dem, Northleach and Bourton-on-thewater) said: “The area that was vandalised is a wonderful area that helps so many in the community, especially those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged.

“I am massively saddened and angry that Greystones has been vandalised.”

The area is also an Iron Age settlement. The area is steeped in history as well as a small working farm area and gardens.

Mr Hodgkinson added: “There are only a small minority that do these things, but it is frequently raised by people in the village.

“It is a lovely village and the last thing you want is selfish behaviour making a sad and negative impact.

“The police have done a good job finding who caused the damage.”

Police have been increasing their patrols in the area.

All of the children involved have been spoken to by officers but also will have to make up for their wrongs.

A Gloucestershire police spokesperson said: “The children identified so far have all been talked to in front of their parents by local officers.

“Further enquiries are ongoing to establish which specific individuals are responsible for the damages.

“When that is accomplished we will look to complete a Restorative Justice between the children and the victims.”

The Cotswold School have been approached to to comment on this story.
