Haskayne is the goal hero as Cleeve see off a resolute Ardley side

-

A SECOND-HALF Archie Haskayne strike was all that separated Bishop’s Cleeve and Ardley United in Oxfordshire

Cleeve set their attacking intent early with Ieuan Crowe firing just wide early on in a match where Cleeve had 30 shots to Ardley’s five.

Cleeve continued to attack up the Ardley hill and new signing Cory Simpson played well on the left before firing a shot just over the bar.

It took till the half hour mark for Ardley to have their first shot which came from a defensive error as Linden Dovey lost out to Kaylem Patterson on the halfway line who was left one on one but fired his shot just wide in what was the best chance for the hosts.

Crowe and Elliott Kennedy went close to giving Cleeve the lead but the sides went in goalless at half time.

Haskayne nearly gave the visitors the lead early in the second half but Ardley goalkeeper Sam Eeles tipped his shot onto the post.

The pressure was almost non stop from Cleeve but they could not find a way through Eeles or the resolute Ardley defence.

Cleeve then saw claims for a penalty waved away as an Ardley foot at upper chest height was not deemed dangerous.

A great through ball by Harrison Iddles then set Kevin Slack through one on one but his shot whilst well struck was straight at Eeles.

Cleeve finally took a deserved lead in the 73rd minute when after some pinball in the box the ball fell to Haskayne on the edge of the area who blasted it into the top left corner with what turned out to be the winning goal.

Ardley did have a chance to equalise with a freekick on the right of the Cleeve box but the shot was fired wide.

Blaine Waugh then had a chance to seal the win but Eeles again did his job well.

Nick Stanley scored Fairford Town’s goal as they fell to a 3-1 loss at tabletoppers Binfield, who ended the game with 10 men.

In Division One West, Cirencester Town Development were beaten 12-0 at Hereford Lads Club, three players hitting hat-tricks.

Callum Trott was Bourton Rovers’ scorer as they lost 5-1 at leaders Malvern Town.
