How they rated against Quins: ‘When he went off, the wheels fell off’

-

15. Kyle Moyle - 7

ON his first Premiership start for the Cherry and Whites the full back recovered from an early spill under the high ball to put in a competent performance. Always looked a threat with the ball in hand making 44 metres and beating two defenders. Safe from the boot with some good clearances as well as a fantastic up and under which lead to Gloucester gaining territory. Unlucky not to score when he was unable to gain control and ground the ball from a kick through from Seabrook.

14. Ollie Thorley - 6

LOOKED threatening at times but was unable to quite get up to full speed. Carried strongly with the ball in hand, making 75 metres. Was involved in what could be deemed as the killer try for Quins as he and Henry Trinder misjudged a high ball and allowed it to bounce into the arms of flanker Will Evans who put Alex Dombrandt in for the score.

13. Billy Twelvetrees - 7

ONE of Gloucester’s key performers in last week’s victory over Wasps and looked set to play a similar role as he made a positive impact early on. Produced some strong attacking lines as Gloucester fought their way back into the game but had to be withdrawn 32 minutes in due to an ankle knock.

12. Mark Atkinson - 6

WORKED well with Evans and Twelvetrees when they were on the field but was unable to impact the game. Beat three defenders and carried well in his time at centre before moving to fly-half. Atkinson showed his footballing capabilities when filling in for Evans with a great touch finder to the corner from a penalty which led to a consolation score.

11. Tom Seabrook - 5

STARVED of ball on the wing so had to resort to chasing box kicks as an attempt to source some ball but he created a good try-scoring chance out of nothing when kicking the ball through for Kyle Moyle to chase but the bounce of the ball meant the full-back couldn’t touch down.

10. Lloyd Evans - 8

CONTINUED his fine form after his man of the match performance against Wasps last weekend. Showed his unflappable ability under the high ball and defensive work rate was shown with a great double tackle in pursuit of a box kick in which he made a first hit on Marcus Smith and then got back to his feet to tackle Nathan Earle. Forced to leave the field after an elbow to the head from Quins centre Andre Esterhuizen which saw the South African receive a red card and left Evans bleeding from the face. When he went off, the wheels fell off.

9. Joe Simpson - 7

HIS usual energetic self during his 40 minutes on the field. Box kicking is one of the fundamental parts of Simpson’s game and he gave some competitive kicks for his wingers to scamper after. His defensive work was strong with a dominant hit on Quins’ flanker Will Evans. Also did exceptionally well to out sprint Marcus Smith to the ball as it rolled over the Gloucester try line to save a try being scored.

1. Jamal Ford-robinson - 5

THE loosehead prop was working defensively hard to try and get his side a foothold in the game. Unfortunately, the standout moment was when he received a harsh yellow card for kicking out at Santiago Garcia Botta who was holding on to his leg at the bottom of a ruck which produced a large brawl from both sides with Chris Ashton at the heart of it.

2. Jack Singleton - 6

CONSISTENT with his lineout throws during his 65 minutes on the field, not losing a throw. Produced a Ciprianiesque over the top looping pass to release Thorley down the right wing.

3. Jack Stanley - 6

THE 24-year-old put in a defensive shift in the first half, before being withdrawn at the break, making seven tackles in the first 40.

4. Ed Slater - 6

ONE of the central figures in the pack’s efforts being Gloucester’s go to lineout option with eight lineout wins. Finished off a great Gloucester move which started with a strong driving maul into the Quins 22. However, that is not to distract from Gloucester’s second half performance in which they struggled to get a hold of the game.

5. Alex Craig - 5

A LATE call up for Matt Garvey who withdrew before kick off and did well considering this. Made eight tackles in his 65 minutes, including a great tackle on Nathan Earle in which he chased down the Quins winger after Earle picked up a loose ball.

6. Jordy Reid - 5

STARTED well, trying to make dominant hits but was caught out when trying to make a strong hit on Alex Dombrandt only to bounce off the number eight as he went onto opening the scoring for the visitors.

7. Lewis Ludlow - 6

TRIED to lead to the best of his ability on the pitch with great work in the lineout disrupting the Quins throw. Given a yellow card for an illegal clear out at a ruck close to the try line.

8. Ruan Ackermann - 6

STARTED the match where he left off last week with an important turnover and produced some fine hands to assist Ed Slater for Gloucester’s first score. Unable to replicate his ball carrying abilities against Wasps barring one thunderous run down the left wing where he bounced his way through four or five Quins players.

Replacements: 16. James Hanson - 7; 17. Alex Seville - 5; 18. Ciaran Knight - 5; 19. Ollie Atkins - 5; 20. Jamie Gibson - 5; 21. Will Flinn - 5; 22. Henry Trinder - 5; 23. Jacob Morris - 6

JAMES Hanson was the only replacement to make a notable contribution with a brace of tries from driving mauls. The bench could not have been able to predict the injuries that would strike during the second half which stunted their ability to get a hold of the game and make a real impact.
