Full-back Carreras signs up

-

GLOUCESTER Rugby have confirmed the signing of eight-cap Argentina international full-back Santiago Carreras until the end of the 2020-21 season.

Carreras, 22, is the latest star to follow the exodus of players leaving the Jaguares since the Argentine franchise lost their place in Super Rugby.

Carreras will link up with the Cherry and Whites immediately following the conclusion of the Rugby Championship between Argentina, New Zealand and Australia.

The versatile Puma played a key part in the international series, starting in the full-back berth in Argentina’s historic 25-15 victory over the All Blacks in Australia.

The 22-year-old started his international career during the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. Chief operating officer Alex Brown said:

“Santiago is an exciting, young player who has burst onto the scene in the last couple of years.

“His versatility in the backline adds further strength in depth to our group and adds that extra competition for places that every squad needs.

“From his performances in the recent Rugby Championship, you can see he is a dangerous player and someone who can give us real momentum in attack, and we are looking forward to seeing him in cherry and white very soon.”

The exciting back has had a meteoric rise since breaking into the Jaguares team in 2019, earning a place in the Argentine side for the 2019 World Cup, where he started three games on the wing.

But this year, Carreras became the Jaguares’ starting full-back and has since been selected there by coach Mario Ledesma.
