20,000-mile challenge aids community
FAIRFORD Rugby Club’s players, coaches and supporters kept active during the most recent lockdown period, covering more than 20,000 miles and raising £1,400 to fund 64 Christmas boxes for local families in need.
Club members were grouped into Badgers and Beavers, with 92 competitors of all ages logging daily miles either by running, walking or cycling.
The 25-day challenge was won by the Beavers – although charity was the winner with those taking part encouraging donations, with money raised going to pay for a number of Christmas gifts for local children.
Head coach Danny Briggs said: “When Boris announced lockdown two, the club rallied around and created a challenge to help the wellbeing of members but also to make a difference in the community.
“Soon enough, the Badgers (male) v the Beavers (female) Race to the North Pole was born.
“The Beavers - led by inspirational captains Wendy Button and Davina Hedges - reached the North Pole within eight days, the challenge was extended and the virtual race back to Fairford began.
“Having reached Fairford on day 15, the competition was extended to see who could complete the most distance with more than 20,000 miles covered as a club.
“Every competitor gave their all and I would personally like to thank them for their efforts.
“As a club we raised £1,420 after Justgiving fees. We will be providing Christmas present boxes to 64 local children, including children from Farmor’s School, Fairford Primary, Lechlade Primary, Carterton Schools.
“We also donated £100 to Shine Bright Support and £100 to the Swindon Rotary Club, who are arranging Christmas boxes for more Swindonbased children.
“Fairford RFC would like to thank all of those people and companies who sponsored us, we cannot achieve anything without you.”
