TWO men will face trial later this month after an alleged hammer attack at a Cheltenham park. A member of the public who was helping to shield another man from attack at Montpellier Gardens on Good Friday had his cheek pierced with a hammer during the incident, a court was told.

The incident happened between 6.45pm and 7.10pm on Friday in Montpellier Gardens, police say.

Prosecutor Cathy Thornton told Cheltenham magistrates that an initial assault occurred inside the Premier Stores on Bath Road, where Oliver Griffiths was allegedly punched five times in the face by Callum Finn, 18.

Mr Griffiths made his way back to Montpellier Gardens, allegedly followed by Finn and Billy Teasdale, she said.

Teasdale, 20, attempted to attack Mr Griffiths with a hammer, Ms Thornton alleged.

She said a member of the public, Dayne Gilson-clark Rosas, intervened and was attacked, with the hammer claw piercing his cheek.

Mr Griffiths was taken to hospital, and was diagnosed with having a bloody lip and severe bruising, but he did not require any further treatment.

Mr Gilson-clark Rosas was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital by paramedics, suffering from the piercing wound to his face and is now recovering at home after being discharged.

Teasdale, 20, of Wards Road, Cheltenham did not indicate any plea to causing grievous bodily harm by wounding with intent Dayne Gilsonclarke Rosas on April 2, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent to Oliver Griffiths and possession of an offensive weapon – a hammer – in a public place, Montpellier Gardens, on the same date.

Finn, of Oldbury Road, did not enter any pleas to a charge of causing actual bodily harm to Mr Griffiths at the Premier store on April 2 in Montpellier Gardens and to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Mr Griffiths on the same date.

Teasdale and Finn were released on conditional bail with a 7pm to 7am curfew to appear at Gloucester Crown Court on April 16 and were warned not to contact each other or the victims in the meantime.

A police statement said: “Investigating officers are keen to hear from anyone who filmed the incident or anyone who has been sent any footage of what took place as this could assist inquiries.
