‘Sexy break’ Lisowski seals last-frame win over Williams

-

JACK Lisowski pulled off his “most satisfying win of the season” as he beat Mark Williams 4-3 in a thrilling World Grand Prix match which had six breaks over 50 and an average frame time of just 13 minutes.

From 2-1 down, Williams knocked in breaks of 117 and 77 (helped by a monster fluke on the blue) to lead 3-2, then Churchdown’s world number 17 Lisowski took frame six with a run of 74.

In the decider, Williams made 35 before missing a tough red to a centre pocket, and Lisowski punished him with a superb 94 which included several difficult pots to keep the run going.

“When you get these opportunities to beat a top player in a deciding frame, you have to step up,” Lisowski, who now meets Stephen Maguire in Coventry today (Thursday), told ITV Sport.

“It was a pretty sexy break in the last frame, they just kept going in.

“I probably have the worst concentration of any player. I have been talking to Peter Ebdon on the phone and in the last frame I was thinking of the things he has told me.

“He is the strongest player mentally ever. If he told me to do star jumps during the game I would do it, I don’t need to know why.

“When I went behind it was time to put what he has told me into practice. I stood up to it when the question was asked, and that’s what the top players do. There’s no better feeling.”

He added: “My form has not been great recently and I will learn more from this game than if I had come out and won 4-0.

“It is my most satisfying win of the season.”

Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry said on ITV that it was “as good as I have ever seen him play” of Lisowski’s final two breaks which won him the game and that he was “as focussed as he had ever seen him.”

Lisowski described Williams’ fluke on the blue as “a dagger to the heart.”

He added: “I just heard the ball drop, and then he cleaned up.

“But you can’t have the run all the time.

“Then I one-visited in the next and broke in the decider and then thought he was going to one-visit but he broke down.

“Then I potted a really good red and managed to win the frame.”
