Pub garden Revamp plan gets the go-ahead despite residents’ fears over noise
ACHELTENHAM pub’s planned revamp of its beer garden has been approved, despite concerns from neighbouring residents.
The Hatherley, in Hatherley Road, Up Hatherley, is now looking to make the changes to its large back garden early in the New Year.
Owner Greene King applied to the borough council to put up a shed, timber pergola with polycarbonate roof, festoon lighting and new timber play equipment.
The original plans were amended after some of the pub’s neighbours objected, and the revised scheme has been approved by the council.
A report by its officers, who made the decision using their delegated powers, said: “The plans have been revised following officers’ and neighbouring properties’ concerns, relating to impact on neighbouring amenity and the loss of the existing hedge. The proposed play equipment has been relocated to the other end of the garden, the hedge and sycamore tree retained and a tree protection plan has been provided for the copper beech tree.”
Despite the amendments, there are still concerns from some of the pub’s neighbours.
In a written submission to the council, one neighbour said they welcomed Greene King’s bid to improve the beer garden but feared the consequences of the proposed scheme.
They said: “In general, we believe the suggested plans will increase noise and air pollution, reduce privacy and have a negative visual impact on this residential road.”
A spokesperson for The Hatherley said: “We have recently received planning permission for a refurbishment to our garden area. We are currently in the planning stage and hope to be able to provide more details in the New Year.”
