Programme will give artists an opportunity to build their careers

- With Sara Oliver from The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, Cheltenham

AS work continues on the vibrant redesign of The Wilson ahead of reopening in July, the museum and art gallery is launching its pioneering We Are Creators artist studio programme, supporting and developing new artistic and creative talent in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire.

The Cheltenham Trust recognises the depth and breadth of local cultural talent and the positive impact that creativity and creating has on our collective wellbeing, as well as the value it adds to the overall quality of life.

From live music and dance, community events and festivals to the showcasing of local creatives, makers and producers at Pittville Pump Room’s monthly artisan market, the trust celebrates community creativity and culture across all its venues.

The We Are Creators programme brings exciting opportunities for local emerging visual artists to develop their practice and build successful careers in the visual arts sector. Seven places will be awarded in The Wilson’s new artist studios, as a bursary programme. Successful artists will be announced before the opening.

The bursary programme will support the professional development of emerging artists by providing studio space for 12 months to enable them to develop their practice. The successful artists will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work and showcase their talent in the new Sir Charles Irving Community Art Gallery to thousands of visitors.

The trust is not only inviting applications for bursaries, but also for the We Are Creators youth fellowship programme, which focuses on supporting the development of local artists under the age of 25.

It offers them the opportunity to: become part of a dynamic network of art and design practice, benefiting from peer guidance and support

be part of The Wilson’s events programme

develop and submit exhibition and project ideas for the exhibition and events programme

be part of the We Are Creators online platform

enjoy free access to workshops and talks from visiting artists

have the opportunity to sell selected products in The Wilson’s café and retail area.

The Wilson is Cheltenham’s main art gallery and museum and its redesign will focus on bringing to life the story of Cheltenham, showcasing its internationally recognised collections and local artists and creatives.

Applications open on Tuesday for the We Are Creators programme. The deadline is midnight on Tuesday May 31. More information is at www. cheltenhammuseum.org.uk
