Wotton complete double while Unett’s goals seal win for Athletic

-

WOTTON Rovers won a rip-roaring Gloucestershire FA Northern Junior Cup final at Bishop’s Cleeve to add to their Stroud League Division Two title success, beating Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves 5-2.

Both teams took the lead before Rovers took control with two goals in four minutes mid-way through the second half.

Rovers took the lead after 10 minutes when Korey Pring took the ball on before driving a low shot into the corner of the net.

Daniel Wills headed the equaliser before half-time and Service turned the game on it’s head on the hour mark when Matt Pegram smashed in a shot from 15 yards.

Back came Rovers and when Matty Herbert was brought down just inside the penalty area, Joe Stokes tucked away the resulting penalty.

Three minutes later Herbert raced onto a through ball to score with a clever lob and in the melee that followed, Civil Service’s Jamie Moore was sent off by referee Callum Newman.

Herbert added a fourth goal with a low finish but Civil Service were handed a lifeline eight minutes from time with a penalty. But Scott Edginton blasted it wide and Rovers completed the scoring in the final minute through Daniel Thorpe.

Meanwhile, Gloucester Athletic won the Gloucestershire FA Minor Cup North Cup in style with a 3-0 victory over Down Ampney.

Two goals from Taylor Unett and another from Reece Smith sealed it for Athletic.

A goal from Unett in the 56th minute put Athletic in front before Ampney won a penalty, but George Bailey was denied by Brad Newmane.

Athletic doubled their lead as a nicely worked passage of play saw them head it across the box to Smith who nodded it home.

With less than five minutes to go, Athletic made absolutely sure as Unett fired a shot into the roof of the net on the volley.
