ATIME capsule has been sunk into the grounds at a new secondary school in Cheltenham. The capsule is full of items which were suggested to be included by the students and it will be opened in 2072.

Newly built, The High School in Leckhampton, will officially open this September.

The £30million building will welcome 900 pupils into the setting which is based on two fields between Farm Lane and Kidnappers Lane.

The intake for the new high school began last year and are currently at Balcarras School in Charlton Kings waiting for the final touches to be made at their new school, which is being built by the construction company Kier Group.

To mark the opening, students filled the capsule with a range of items that reflect the school and wider community.

Sunk on May 10, videos in various formats have been included to reflect school life as it is now.

Letters and work have been placed in the capsule as well as school photos of the students.

There are items that reflect the Covid-19 era as well as contributions from the church and partner primary schools.

The High School Leckhampton’s Headteacher Helen Wood said: “This has been a very exciting project for the pupils of our new school, allowing them to not only think about their future but to articulate their aspirations for the school.

“We hope that when the time capsule is opened in 2072, and our aim to create a thriving, community school has been realised.

“We’d like to thank Kier for organising such a super visit.

“We are all looking forward to relocating to the fantastic new school this September.”

Cheltenham MP Alex Chalk has also written a letter and contributed an object for the capsule.

There are other letters reflecting the Balcarras Trust’s involvement and Ms Wood, Headteacher, has written a letter for those who unearth it.

The capsule has been sunk in the courtyard of the new school premises.

Its position has been noted and a plaque has been mounted on a nearby wall to commemorate the event.
