Pool closed by safety concerns set to reopen

-

PARENTS and children who have missed out on swimming lessons and fun at Leisure at Cheltenham have been told when the teaching pool and Splash Pad will reopen.

They were closed in January after an inspection revealed ceiling panels with RAAC (reenforced autoclaved aerated concrete), the building material at the centre of a widespread safety review.

But leisure centre bosses have said that work is nearing completion on essential structural repairs. The teaching pool and Splash Pad will reopen on Monday, April 15.

This is subject to no last-minute issues arising, customers were told in an email.

The letter added: “The next phase of the maintenance work will begin shortly with the complete closure of the wellness suite from Thursday, April 4. It is anticipated the work in this area will take several weeks. “We will keep you updated as the work progresses. Swimming lesson customers are being contacted separately, by email, with an update on the resumption of all classes from 15 April 2024.”

The teaching pool and Splash Pad were closed in January following the findings by specialist structural engineers, who advised immediate closure to ensure the safety of customers and staff. Urgent structural repair work was undertaken to reinforce the sections of the ceiling structure containing RAAC concrete.

The affected area was centred on the teaching pool and Splash Pad. From April 15, the programme returns to normal with the Splash Pad open for bookings, and swimming lessons and aqua aerobics sessions resume in the teaching pool.
