Are PXG’S Gen3 irons worth £3k?

-

I recently got custom fitted for the PXG Gen3 irons to try and find out if they live up to their £3,000-plus price tag.

Technology

There are three models within the range and each head is forged five times to make them feel softer than previous models. Impact Reactor technology comprises two materials, a mantle layer supporting the thin face and a deeper layer of high COR soft polymer, for added ball speed and feel.

Looks

The premium satin finish is lovely and the white bottom groove helps with alignment. The T model is nice and compact and the P model remains refined while looking easier to hit.

Feel/sound

It’s arguably one of the best-feeling iron ranges out there – buttery soft, especially on the T model, but without losing the oomph you want from the larger P and XP models.

Performance

Surprisingly consistent on mishits versus centred hits – minimal ball speed and distance was lost. Consistent flights make it easier to build a combination set. The T and P models produced similar distance and the XP iron went significantly further, as expected given the lofts.

Verdict

The looks, feel and consistency I experienced, as well as the tour-level fitting, were certainly impressive. But whether £440 per club is worth it will come down to the individual.
