“I’m really particular. I can tell you if my clubs are half a degree flat or upright”

Back in the day I played the Bubble Burner woods, the ones that Ernie played. I switched to all Taylormade clubs and the golf ball right after the Walker Cup at County Down [2007]. That was when I signed with Taylormade. I didn’t have a single Taylormade club or golf ball in my bag at the time. The transition was very easy for me – the golf ball was great, I really liked it. I had no issues finding clubs; the driver and fairway woods were really good. I’m pretty sure at that time it was the V-steel fairway woods and the driver was the Superquad.

I’m really particular. I can tell you if my clubs are 1/16th of an inch too long or half a degree flat or upright. I can tell because I’ve been using the same stuff for so long. I’ll tell Keith and he’ll say, “no way”. He’ll go and check it and I’m usually right!

My swing hasn’t changed, so we know the specs that should work. It takes no more than a couple of shots. I can hit one ball and tell you good golf ball or a great one.

Every player is a little bit different, so it’s hard to make golf balls for everyone. A ball that is really good for every shot is hard to make. I think we have done a really good job of doing that and I think we have, for all conditions, the best ball on tour.

I change wedges all the time. We have milled wedges, so the bounce doesn’t change or anything like that. It is really easy to change – I’ll throw a brand-new set of wedges in before I play one day if I need them. Generally, I just switch the 60˚. My other wedges I don’t change out very much during the year, but the 60˚ I will because that’s the one I want to spin. The other wedges I want to control the spin. Around the greens you want all the spin you can get, and I don’t hit too many full shots with my 60˚ because I’m always trying to control it.
