Greenside bunker drills

-

1Draw a ten-foot line in the sand and set up with an imagined ball position just inside your left heel, but no ball. Break your wrists nice and early on your takeaway and focus on utilising the bounce at impact, rather than digging in. Work your way along the line, repeating the process. You’re looking for nice, shallow divots – ideally the same depth and size – starting two to three inches behind the line. This will help groove the correct feel at impact.

2Greenside bunker shots require what I call more of a U-shaped swing, and that means allowing the clubhead to pass the grip through impact. This release is the opposite to what you use in chipping, which requires more of a holding action through the ball. A good way to hone this feel is to make right-hand-only practice swings, which will help give you the feeling of a U-shaped swing as the clubhead passes the grip.
