Taylormade P7MC Iron £ 1,299

GM Verdict

-

The P7MC becomes one of six P-series irons in the Taylormade range designed for the better player. We tested it in the stock KBS Tour 120 shaft on the Foresight Sports Gcquad launch monitor indoors to gain insights into performance. We then took it outdoors on the range at West Hill, to assess feel and observe ball flight.

We’ve used the P760 for a couple of years, with the irons bent one-degree weaker, making the 7-iron 34°. This is the same as the P7MC, so it was going to be where the most interesting comparison could be made.

The P7MC is more compact at address than both the outgoing P760 and new P770, with hardly any offset on show and a slightly thinner topline.

The P7MC doesn’t quite have the firepower of the P770, but it does feel softer off the face, which the better player may well prefer. It was also very consistent and a little more workable,

We loved how the ball flight was so consistent appealing to players who like to shape the ball both ways.

Both the P7MC and the bladed P7MB were surprisingly forgiving for their respective sizes, but the P7MC certainly offers a little more help on mishits and a touch more spring off the face at impact, without sending the ball too far on very good strikes. Among its competitive set, the P7MC might not quite have the stability in the longer irons, but the difference to the target player who is a competent ball-striker won't be overly noticeable. It also makes up for it somewhat in looks and feel at impact.

We much prefer the turf interaction of the P7MC over the P7MB, too, with its more rounded sole gliding through the turf with minimal snagging, providing a little more speed and margin for error on the strike.

The looks are stunning and the finish is consistent across all three of the new designs. There is undoubtedly

scope to mix and match two or even three models within a set to get the performance you want in different parts of your bag. The P7MC is premium priced, but offers everything the better player is looking for.

Key Technology

The P7MC is a muscle cavity iron that replaces the P750 and features a classic shape with minimal offset to deliver control and precision.

The shape of the new backbar is designed to elevate feel by moving mass behind the point of impact.

Use of a Compact Grain Forging process that involves a 2,000-ton press ensures the metal has a tighter grain structure to provide the most solid, consistent feel possible.

“This might well be the bestlooking Taylormade iron I’ve ever seen and it is likely to replace my old P760s” Joel Tadman, GM technical editor

 ?? ?? Looks
Refined and elegant, we love the cosmetic grooves in the back of the head and the soft curves elsewhere. It appears compact behind the ball but without being overly intimidating.

The data was as expected from a traditionally lofted 7- iron, with spin just over the 6,000rpm mark and a peak height of 34 yards, hitting the ballflight window we wanted.
A heavier forging press means less hand polishing is required to create the final shape
