GM Verdict

The Titleist TSI drivers, in particular the TSI3, have seen a rapid take-up on tour, even among non-contracted players. As such, we were keen to try them out. We tested both the TSI2 and TSI3 against the prior generation to get into the nitty-gritty of how the performance has changed and what you can expect.

The TSI2 has a fixed rear weight and light grey detailing on the sole to distinguish it from the TSI3. We like how the moveable sole weight setting on TSI3 is now visible – on the TS3 you had to unscrew and remove the Surefit CG weight to see what it was, which was time-consuming.

Our custom- fitted TSI3 driver in action

While we tested both, the TSI3 gave us a greater increase in ball speed, albeit with a different shaft. This was partly down to adopting the T2 setting on the Surefit CG track, which straightened out our heavily drawbiased flight and also positioned more weight behind our common high-toe miss. As a result, we experienced more carry distance and a straighter, more consistent flight with TSI3 over TS3. A flatter-lie-angle hosel setting also encouraged a more neutral flight.

TSI2 is arguably better suited to golfers who utilise different parts of the face, because of the extra forgiveness it offers. It delivered a slightly higher launch than TS2 with a touch more speed, but we found we were able to create a similar spin profile to the TSI3 through the fitting process.

On both drivers, the consistency of spin was very impressive. It wasn’t jumping around from different strikes and as a result the carry distances were also more consistent and longer.

With the multitude of settings and shafts available with TSI3, a custom fitting is a must to get the most out of it. Gains over the previous model will vary from player to player, but we certainly got more out of TSI3 than expected.

Titleist has made significant improvements in many different areas to improve the appeal of the TSI drivers to lots of different player types. The TSI2 driver is an exceptional allrounder. It has that classic and traditional Titleist look while also being easy to hit. Our testing showed that both are longer than TS – TSI3 in particular is able to unlock extra performance and produce longer but more playable distance thanks to the multitude of settings. The premium price tag may be a stumbling block, but if you haven’t upgraded your driver in a few years, we’re confident you’ll see a sharp gain in overall performance.
