Cleveland RTX Full Face Wedge £129
GM Verdict
The emergence of full-face grooves are a popular new trend when it comes to modern wedges. Cleveland’s take on the full-face wedge comes in the form of the RTX Full-face. It looks to compete with the likes of the Taylormade Hi-toe Raw and Callaway Jaws Full Toe Wedge for those looking to reap the benefits of a full-face grooved wedge.
The premise of a full-face wedge is that it will give you more spin and forgiveness if you tend to open the face a lot on your chip shots. Whenever you open the face – for a flop shot or similar – the ball will tend to slide up the face. Having these full-face grooves right up to the toe means you can confidently open the face and play a flop shot knowing you will remain in control.
This was certainly the case when using the RTX Full-face and having the Ultizip grooves covering the whole face provided more forgiveness – and more spin – from strikes high and towards the toe. This feature is especially useful out of bunkers, where the ball has a tendency to strike high on the face. While we would only recommend opting for the RTX Full-face in your highestlofted wedge, there’s no reason why you could not fill the bag with a set of full-face wedges – it comes in lofts from 50-64°. On full approach shots, the RTX Full-face performed as well as it did on flop shots, with plenty of control and forgiveness from a range of lies.
The RTX Full-face sits very nicely in the full-face wedge market, looking smart behind the ball and providing the confidence for golfers who like to utilise highflying short-game shots. Whether you would fill the bag with this type of wedge is up to personal preference, but as an outright lob wedge it is a stand-out option.
