BEST NATIONWIDE DELIVEROO

Our testers loved the concept and choice of popular chains, such as Wagamama and Prezzo, plus high-end restaurants to order from. The website is easy to use. Delivery time varies depending on area but the drivers all made a good impression. The delivery charge is £2.50, which our testers found reasonable. Minimum order is either £10 or £15, depending on where you live. deliveroo.co.uk

BIGGEST CHOICE JUST-EAT

A well-established service, with hundreds of restaurants to choose from. Customer service is excellent, but there is a 50p charge to pay by card. Minimum order depends on the restaurant, but delivery is usually free or very affordable. just-eat.co.uk

RUNNERS UP HUNGRY HOUSE

If you’ve got a favourite nearby restaurant, you’ll like Hungry House. There’s plenty of choice from your local takeaways, they’re quick to arrive and it’s easy enough to order – but the website’s not that slick. Delivery’s often free; minimum order depends where you order from. hungryhouse.co.uk

JINN

Quick delivery and great customer service, but a little less choice. Delivers items such as groceries, wine and even flowers, which testers liked. Delivery costs £5.95 and the minimum order depends on the restaurant. jinnapp.com

ONE DELIVERY

Delivery is fast and efficient. Choice varies depending on the area and delivery times can be limited. The website’s not very user-friendly and delivery charges are quite high. Delivery cost and minimum orders depend on the restaurant. one-delivery.co.uk

RISING STAR AMAZON RESTAURANTS

Amazon Restaurants is currently only available to Prime members living in London, but there are plans to expand. Our tester loved the choice of restaurants and the tracking feature. Customer service was excellent. A slick website and free delivery made it our favourite. amazon.co.uk

◆ HOW IT WORKS

All services allow you to pay online with your credit or debit card, and some with Paypal, too. It may be possible to pay with cash on arrival, but check the website. Deliveroo lets you add a tip to the order, but other sites don’t. If you want to tip the driver, you can do it when they arrive.

◆ HOW WE TESTED

The GHI conducted a secret shopper triple-test on eight delivery services across the country. Our criteria? Great customer service, plenty of choice and fast delivery.
