I’m 51, and have noticed my feet are getting flatter and I seem to have gone up a shoe size. Why is this and can I stop it getting any worse? Is it time for sensible shoes?

AThis is a very normal part of ageing. ‘As we get older, the collagen that supports the muscles, ligaments and tendons in the feet stops rejuvenating itself as effectively,’ says consultant podiatrist Matthew Fitzpatrick. ‘This leads to a broadening effect on the forefoot. It can also happen in pregnancy because chemicals are released that act on elastin, which supports soft tissues and collagen.’

You can help your feet by leading an active lifestyle. ‘If you keep the foot muscles strong, they’re better able to support the tendons,’ he advises. As for shoes, there’s no need to throw away your heels or favourite ballet pumps. ‘Shoe choice depends on how long you want to spend in them,’ says Matthew. ‘If you’re just going to a restaurant for the evening, then heels are fine, but it’s not ideal to wear them all day. In Summer, unsupportive shoes such as flip-flops are okay for the beach, but for longer wear, you need something that offers support to the arch and attaches to the foot with straps, laces or buckles.’
