EDITOR’S NOTE
Ibought my very first washing machine 25 years ago, when I moved into my tiny new home with the man who was to become my husband. Two things struck me at the time: How grown up am I to finally own a washing machine? And how fabulous that there’s a magazine that’s tested everything for me! Since then, I’ve bought several washing machines and used Good Housekeeping to get the best deal. I’ve also produced three children, now grown themselves, and my eldest has just moved into his first home, bought a washing machine and said the same thing!
All of which is a complicated way of saying how very happy and proud I am to have been given the chance to edit this amazing institution. Good Housekeeping (and its beating heart, the Good Housekeeping Institute) has been here for my generation, my mum’s and my children’s – and that’s just its recent history.
Good Housekeeping has survived war, sexual revolution, the emergence of female power and even 1970s fashion, and it has fallen to me to steer it safely on. No pressure then!
Our previous editor, Lindsay Nicholson, became GH’S editor in 1998 and took it to become the UK’S bestselling lifestyle magazine. A brilliant journalist and a good friend, she instilled in me the importance of the great trust our readers have for this magazine. Every recipe must be Triple Tested, no claim left unchallenged.
So that is my promise to you. Alongside our fabulous GH writers – experts in fashion, beauty, money and consumer rights, in health and homes and food and travel – I will never forget the heritage of this amazing magazine.

I asked for my editor’s picture to be taken in the GHI, because I believe that’s our unique area of expertise – where we can really truly help you save time and money. I’m planning lots more testing by the GHI but, in the meantime and rather fittingly, this month our experts have tested washing machines… (see page 157)
