‘I’m enjoying being a passenger in life again’

For Sex And The City actress Kim Cattrall, life is all about shifting gear, adapting to change – and making sure she takes better care of her feet

We need to listen more. We’re all so busy, we don’t get a chance to prioritise and let ourselves just sit, listen, and take in where someone else is at and communicate. Whether it’s a friend, family or your partner, the key to a happy relationship is giving each other time to listen and catch up.

It feels like a revolution in Hollywood right now. What has been the norm is no longer the norm. For so long, it was part of what the business was. It needed this. We’re still in the process of revealing and exposing what happened, and it’s a painful time to read about your heroes and what they had to put up with. Early on in my career, I had a situation that made me realise I could be vulnerable. I decided that I’d never be alone in a casting call or a meeting. It was always in a public place.

The ageing process is humbling. There’s a lot of wonderful insights as you get older, but you do miss the natural boost you get when you wake in the morning. But I think I am dealing with it well.

Do what makes you happy. That adage of you’ve got to have it all – you can’t. I’m becoming more selective with what I do. I still want to experience things – especially learning. I love being a student. I love photography and often spend afternoons with my photographer friends, and I’m sitting for a painting on Portrait Artist Of The Year on Sky Arts. I’m so excited.

My feet are probably the most underappreciated part of my body. As I get older, I realise that if my feet aren’t happy, I’m going to be miserable. I take more care of them, stretching and massaging them. Looking at the amount of steps I do every day is astonishing. I feel like I haven’t gone to the gym, but my feet have.

I’m not in such a hurry any more. I think it’s a reflection of where I am in my life now – I’m enjoying being a passenger again. When you’re younger, you’re in the front seat of your life and want to get somewhere. But now, I don’t have to drive all the time. I can be in the backseat and enjoy the view, while going forward.
