The latest online SCAMS you need to know about
It can be easy to fall victim to scams when you’re distracted by the excitement (and demands) of the festive season. Here are some traps to watch out for…
PHISHING SCAMS
These look like genuine emails but are designed to trick you into handing over your username and password. A common tactic used at this time of year is to claim your online shopping accounts have been used fraudulently. They then invite you to log on using a ‘handy’ link. Contact retailers directly to check instead.
GIFT CARD FRAUD
You receive an email, call or text saying you owe HMRC or another organisation money, adding that you can reduce the bill by paying using gift cards. You are then asked for the serial number or code on the card, which scammers will either use to pay for goods or sell on.
PAYMENT REDIRECTION ATTEMPTS
Be wary of emails claiming to be from builders, solicitors or anyone else you plan to make a bank transfer to asking you to send the money to a different account. Their email may have been hacked and scammers may be attempting to redirect the payment. Call your contact to confirm the email actually came from them.
THE GOLDEN RULES
Always follow these top tips when it comes to identifying scams: ◆ Look for spelling and grammar mistakes in emails, which can be a tell-tale sign they are fake (but is not foolproof!). ◆ Never click on links in emails. Instead, open a browser and type in the address. ◆ Remember that no genuine organisation will ask for bills to be paid using gift cards. ◆ Report suspicious emails or calls to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
