The new hair-dos Post-lockdown, ‘the usual’ no longer applies when it comes to our hair, says beauty editor Gillian Davies. JOIN THE BAND

From delicate and thin to domed and padded and jewel-embellished, this season, headbands ruled the runway. Luxe fabrics, such as silk or velvet, ensure that a hairband says stylish statement, rather than schoolgirl and, while the catwalk colour of choice was black, don’t let that limit you. Try… Johnny Loves

Rosie Charlotte Headband (1), £28; Orelia Leopard Embroidered Turban Headband in Blue (2), £35.

FRINGE BENEFITS

As most of us were stuck with the same (in need of a cut) style during lockdown, Redken’s UK Ambassador, Larry King, thinks we’re now more open to making fun, impactful changes to our hair. He suggests adding a fringe as a quick way to transform your look, and credits Marianne (played by Daisy Edgar-jones) in the BBC adaption of Sally Rooney’s Normal People for making fringes cool again. Ask your stylist for a soft, round fringe with its shortest point in the middle, which sits just above the eyebrows. ‘This is more flattering than a blunt, horizontal cut and grows out to create pretty face-framing layers,’ advises Larry.

NATURAL TEXTURE

Salons being closed led to a whole new appreciation for our curls, too, says Larry: ‘Many of my clients pressed pause on heated tools and started caring for their curls with treatments and masks, so were able to appreciate their hair’s natural texture, instead of constantly trying to change it.’ Along with using a targeted shampoo and conditioner (turn to Beauty That Works on page 67 to see which brands came out top in our GHI tests), when it comes to styling, reach for Rita Hazan Curl Crème, £22, or Holy Curls

Gel, £18. Both keep curls looking sharp and defined.

RED HOT

If you’re feeling open to experimenting with colour, red is going to be the next big thing for hair, according to editorial ambassador for L’oréal Professionnel UK Adam Reed: ‘Brunettes and those with dark hair can take a warm berry-inspired shade, while blondes look beautiful with hints of strawberry blonde and copper.’ Dip your toe into the trend with semi-permanent toner (Josh Wood Colour Gloss, £19, which comes in four red shades, is brilliant) or download L’oréal’s free Style My Hair app, which lets you virtually change your hair colour. Be cautious when colouring any greys, though, says hairdresser Michael Douglas: ‘Grey hair is actually white, so you’ll need a brown-based red to stop it from turning pink.’
