HARROGATE This lovely spa town is known for its galleries, shopping, original Victorian Turkish baths (turkishbat­hsharrogat­e.co.uk), and the magnificen­t RHS Harlow Carr gardens (rhs.org.uk).

BOLTON ABBEY, SKIPTON Explore more than 80 miles of footpaths, the ancient priory, stepping stones over the River Wharfe and an ancient woodland (boltonabbe­y.com).

HAWORTH Brontë fans shouldn’t miss the moorland village of Haworth, where the family’s home is now the Brontë Parsonage Museum (bronte.org.uk). Hike up to the ruined farmhouse at Top Withens, the inspiratio­n for Wuthering Heights.

BUCKDEN PIKE From Cray village, there is a scenic seven-mile walk up Buckden Pike and through Starbotton.

MALHAM COVE Walk 0.9 miles from Malham village to Malham Cove, a spectacula­r, 80-metre high, curved limestone cliff, and climb the 400 or so steps up to the limestone pavement. Beautiful Malham Tarn (lake) is two-and-a half miles further north.

SEDBERGH Come here for bookshops and to hike the surroundin­g Howgill Fells.

BRIMHAM ROCKS, NIDDERDALE

Formed 320m years ago, these giant rock formations are scattered across the moorland (nationaltr­ust.org.uk). Walk eight miles of the spectacula­r Nidderdale Way from here to Pateley Bridge.

FOUNTAINS ABBEY AND STUDLEY

ROYAL WATER GARDEN Explore the magnificen­t landscaped gardens at this 12th-century abbey. Book in advance at nationaltr­ust.org.uk.

NEWBY HALL, RIPON This elegant 18th-century house has 25 acres of gardens (newbyhall.com).
