Many independen­t breweries are showcased in Dales pubs: look out for Black Sheep from Masham, Copper Dragon (Skipton) and Dark Horse (Hetton). Foodies will love the artisan steak and ale pies, Jackson’s of Cracoe sausages from Grassingto­n and slow-baked bread from the Two Dales Bakery in Reeth. This national institutio­n has been serving exquisite, three-tiered-cake-stand afternoon teas for more than 100 years (bettys.co.uk).

CRAVEN ARMS, APPLETREEW­ICK

Find real ales, log fires and wooden beams at this 16th-century former farmhouse. Try belly pork, and sticky ginger pudding (craven-cruckbarn.co.uk). 

THE LISTER ARMS, MALHAM

In the gorgeous village of Malham, Yorkshire’s

Favourite Pub 2019 has a huge stone fireplace and flagstone floors. There are 23 cosy bedrooms, and steak and ale pies on the menu. Doubles from £105, B&B (listerarms.co.uk).

WENSLEYDAL­E CREAMERY, HAWES

A must-stop for artisan cheese fans, The Creamery includes a cafe, restaurant, shop and museum (wensleydal­e.co.uk). 

THE WHITE LION INN, CRAY

This former drovers’ inn stands near the River Wharfe, with Buckden Pike looming nearby. Book one of the nine bedrooms or warm up by the pub’s wood-burning stove with a ciabatta sandwich. Doubles from £110, B&B (bestpubint­hedales.co.uk). 

TAN HILL INN, SWALEDALE

The highest pub in Britain is often a blustery place to be, but the Pennine Way (the walking trail from Derbyshire to the Scottish Borders) location makes it worth braving the elements (tanhillinn.com).
