FOOD AND DRINK
Many independent breweries are showcased in Dales pubs: look out for Black Sheep from Masham, Copper Dragon (Skipton) and Dark Horse (Hetton). Foodies will love the artisan steak and ale pies, Jackson’s of Cracoe sausages from Grassington and slow-baked bread from the Two Dales Bakery in Reeth. Pubs, restaurants with rooms and tea shops are a big thing in the Dales. Here are some of our favourites…
BETTYS HARROGATE
This national institution has been serving exquisite, three-tiered-cake-stand afternoon teas for more than 100 years (bettys.co.uk).
CRAVEN ARMS, APPLETREEWICK
Find real ales, log fires and wooden beams at this 16th-century former farmhouse. Try belly pork, and sticky ginger pudding (craven-cruckbarn.co.uk).
THE LISTER ARMS, MALHAM
In the gorgeous village of Malham, Yorkshire’s
Favourite Pub 2019 has a huge stone fireplace and flagstone floors. There are 23 cosy bedrooms, and steak and ale pies on the menu. Doubles from £105, B&B (listerarms.co.uk).
WENSLEYDALE CREAMERY, HAWES

THE WHITE LION INN, CRAY
This former drovers’ inn stands near the River Wharfe, with Buckden Pike looming nearby. Book one of the nine bedrooms or warm up by the pub’s wood-burning stove with a ciabatta sandwich. Doubles from £110, B&B (bestpubinthedales.co.uk).
TAN HILL INN, SWALEDALE
The highest pub in Britain is often a blustery place to be, but the Pennine Way (the walking trail from Derbyshire to the Scottish Borders) location makes it worth braving the elements (tanhillinn.com).
