Get your home clean for the NEW YEAR

The tree has come down, the wrapping paper is in the recycling bin... but what about that chocolate smear on the sofa? Here, our experts offer advice on removing common stains.

-

RED WINE

There may be nothing nicer than relaxing with a glass of red, but it’s not such a great feeling if you accidentally spill it. Whether it’s on a rug, carpet, upholstery or clothing, treat it with Wine No More! (£7.99, Lakeland). Containing no bleach or harsh chemicals, this wonder product removes red wine stains with minimum fuss. Simply blot the stain (use soda water or sparkling water if the stain has dried), spray on and leave for five minutes, blot again, then rinse off the residue.

CHOCOLATE

Get rid of chocolate marks by gently scraping off any remains using a blunt knife or blotting with white paper towels. Then treat the affected area with Dr Beckmann Carpet Stain Remover (£2.79 for 650ml) and remove the residue with a damp white cloth.

TEA AND COFFEE

Spilt your cuppa? Soak up as much of the tea or coffee as you can with a paper towel or cloth, then treat with Dr Beckmann Carpet Stain Remover (see above).

PET STAINS

If your pet has an accident, don’t despair! On carpet, sponge the area with cold water and blot until nearly dry. Treat with a carpet cleaner, such as Dr Beckmann Pet Stain & Odour Remover (£3.59 for 650ml). Then flush the area with cold water containing a few drops of disinfectant and blot to dry.
