Good times with... Jasmine Hemsley
Cook, author and wellbeing expert Jasmine Hemsley lives in Bromley, Kent, with her fiancé, Nick Hopper.
The last great film you saw…
The Forty-year-old Version, a comedy drama with an unexpected romance. It’s a gem of a film that explores some of the toughest parts of being human with humour and sensitivity.
The films you could watch over and over… Strictly Ballroom and Dirty Dancing. What’s not to like about a good love story set against some seriously good dancing?
The performance that made you
cry… When I was working in Georgia I had the chance to trek up the Caucasus mountains to Gergeti Trinity Church. We crowded inside to hear a mass led by Mama Serafime and his choir. Words can’t describe the serenity and beauty of those 45 minutes.
The podcast you loved… I’m currently making my way through Bay Garnett’s This Old Thing. She’s a lifelong thrifter and her podcast is all about the joy of shopping second-hand.
The last boxset you binged on…
The Mandalorian on Disney+. My partner Nick and I watched the last series in two days – we were obsessed! Top of your TV planner this month…
I have Netflix’s The White Tiger on my list and Mantra – Sounds Into Silence, a documentary exploring the new music and social phenomenon of chanting, which is right up my street.
The last album you loved…
Islandman’s Kaybola – the sound is electro-acoustic and like no other music I know. And I have to say, Dolly Parton’s Christmas album!
The one you want to hear…
Anything by Liverpudlian singer-songwriter Låpsley. I’ve just discovered her single Painter (Valentine) on Spotify, and I’m looking forward to making my way through her work.
The book that inspired you… I’ve
just been reading Fears To Fierce: A Woman’s Guide To Owning Her Power, by Women For Women International director Brita Fernandez Schmidt. She shares what she’s learned about empowering women through her 25 years of humanitarian work.
The best recommendation you received… I’m halfway through the Mahabharata on the recommendation of my meditation teacher Gary Gorrow. It’s an ancient Indian epic of 100,000 verses and is packed with philosophical and spiritual knowledge.
