BEST BUDGET MILK CHOCOLATE EGG Aldi Wildflower Egg £5.59 for 200g 77/100
You’d never guess that this pretty egg – decorated with a spring-style wildflower design – was our best budget buy. The combination of milk chocolate and hazelnut ganache proved a hit with our panel, who also enjoyed the contrasting textures.
BEST WHITE CHOCOLATE EGG
Morrisons The Best White & Blonde
Chocolate Egg £6 for 240g 82/100 Combining white and blonde chocolate (which adds more of a toasted, caramel flavour), this marbled egg is delicious. Some likened it to Lotus Biscoff biscuits, with its not-too-sweet butterscotch notes. The shell was a little thin, but overall, it’s a top choice if creamy white chocolate is your favourite.
RUNNER-UP WHITE CHOCOLATE EGG
Waitrose & Partners Raspberry Ribbon
Easter Egg £7 for 175g 81/100
Decorated with pink and red flecks and ribbons, there’s no mistaking the flavour here, with an intense aroma of raspberry sorbet. Tart, fruity notes are perfectly balanced by the creamy white chocolate, making this a solid choice for Easter.
BEST BUDGET WHITE CHOCOLATE EGG
Aldi Moser Roth Blonde Chocolate
Geometric Egg £2.99 for 120g 79/100 Aldi’s inexpensive egg looks as good as it tastes with a unique geometric design. Described as ‘very smooth’, you can expect notes of caramel, brown butter and malt biscuit, with crunchy flecks adding texture.
BEST DARK CHOCOLATE EGG
Waitrose & Partners Orange Ribbon
Easter Egg £7 for 163g 85/100
Scoring higher than any other egg on test, this sophisticated offering from Waitrose is made from decadent dark chocolate flavoured with orange and is new for Easter 2023. Our testing panel loved the striking copper ribbon design and found the classic flavour pairing perfectly balanced. Sweet, fruity and bitter – we predict a bestseller.
RUNNER-UP DARK CHOCOLATE EGG
Asda Extra Special Peppermint & Cocoa Nib Dark Chocolate Egg £7 for 400g 83/100
You don’t usually describe an Easter egg as ‘refreshing’ – but that’s exactly how testers referred to this green stripey confection from Asda. Cooling mint crystals, hiding within the delicious Rainforest Alliance dark chocolate, melt pleasingly in the mouth. The intense peppermint flavour that is released lingers long after the last bite, making this an excellent choice to round off your indulgent Easter roast.
BEST BUDGET DARK CHOCOLATE EGG Morrisons The Best Belgian Dark Chocolate & Raspberry Egg £6 for 240g 73/100
This egg might look plain but there’s no compromise on flavour, combining dark chocolate with sweet raspberry. It reminded some of our panel of Turkish Delight, and they found the crunchy pieces in the shell to be a real highlight.
BEST VEGAN CHOCOLATE EGG Cocoa Loco Giant Bakewell Cherry & Almond Egg £37.95 for 1.25kg; Abel & Cole 78/100
You get over a kilo of plant-based chocolate here so this is a great one to share (if you can!). We loved the big chunks of almonds and sour cherries embedded in the thick chocolate shell. There are dark chocolate buttons inside and all the packaging is compostable, too.

Known for its decadent Piedmont hazelnut chocolate, Venchi’s super-dark, glossy creation is suitable for vegans and is also gluten-free. There’s a hint of sweet caramel and the popcorn-like texture of the nougat adds a lovely crunch.
BEST BUDGET VEGAN CHOCOLATE EGG
Asda Free From Lemon Cheesecake
Easter Egg £4.50 for 160g 70/100
You might think dark chocolate is the only option for those avoiding animal products, but this lemon-flavoured white chocolate proves otherwise. The panel enjoyed the popping-candy-like texture and refreshing citrus notes. Free from egg, milk and gluten.
