‘ I GET TEASED FOR WALKING L IKE A DUCK WHEN I ’ M TIRED – I DRAG MY FEET’

Who is your hero?

James Baldwin [above], who was an author and civil rights activist. He was one of the first people to write about being a black gay man in the ’50s and ’60s.

What are you most proud of?

My first album, Sing To The Moon. It’s the first bit of work that I’ve ever finished.

What do your friends tease you about?

Being a granny. I love staying in watching Netflix, and ordering food on ubereats. I also get teased for walking like a duck when I’m tired. I drag my feet along.

What did you think about before falling asleep last night?

Honestly? I was missing my ex-boyfriend.

Who do you call in a crisis?

My sister, always. She’s very to the point and always tells me the truth. She doesn’t sugar-coat things.

What song do you never skip?

Don’t Stop ’Tilyou Get Enough by Michael Jackson.

What’s your go-to dinner party anecdote?

At my first BRIT Awards, I tripped and fell flat on my face. Boy George had to help me up.

What from your past would you like to delete from the internet?

A lot of my live show pictures. I make really strange faces when I’m playing, and those are the ones that seem to circulate most.

Who owes you an apology?

Anyone who assumes my music is written by a man behind the scenes.

Tell us a secret.

I’m probably moving to LA next month, I haven’t told anybody that. I went for a break recently and found a really cool studio which I might take residence in for a bit.

What’s your biggest regret?

Feeling like I had to wear extensions and weaves from a young age – they really damaged my hair. Also, not seeing Erykah Badu [below] at the Hammersmith Apollo, but I had my own show that night.

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

That hat I’m a diva. Apparently, I have quite a fierce look, which can be perceived as intimidating, but I’m actually horrendously orrendously shy and very sensitive. I care a lot about what people think.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Eat a few less double cheeseburgers.
