Getting through UK passport control after a holiday is painful enough. When you don’t take your partner’s name (41% of us, thank you very much) and your kids have a different surname from you, it’s hell on wheels. Bad-tempered immigration officers have to establish that you haven’t, in fact, kidnapped your own kids. And 600,000 women have been stopped due to this in the last five years. The solution? As MP Tulip Siddiq said last week – after being detained for 45 minutes with her family – the problem could be fixed at a stroke by putting both parents’ names on passports. When you consider the Government is prepared to spend £500m making our passports blue, is that really such a big ask?
