VA-VA VERSACA!

MILAN GAVE US

-

when donatella versace unveiled the surprise supermodel finale of September’s S/S ’18 Versace show, it wasn’t so much a moment as The Moment of the year in fashion. Twenty years after her brother Gianni was murdered in Miami, Donatella paid tribute to his legacy with a collection that referenced his greatest hits. And what could be more quintessentially Gianni than the quintet of original supermodels, and Gianni faves, Donatella chose to close the show? There they were: Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen, imperious, resplendent and utterly fabulous, a phalanx of Studio 54-ready goddesses in gold chain-mail ( but you’ll know that, of course, you’ll have seen it all over Instagram). The audience went wild, the internet broke, the ’90s models proved they still had it – and then some. Major? Epic more like. Gianni would have been proud.

If every season has one breakout star, then S/S ’18 belonged to Kaia Gerber. The coltish Maliburaised teen made her debut at Calvin Klein, opened for Chanel, closed for Marc Jacobs and walked for Prada, Saint Laurent, Off-white, Alexander Wang and other hot-ticket shows in-between. Kaia, who turned 16 only days before her catwalk debut, has a composure beyond her years, carrying off a Moschino tutu and biker with the same panache she had in a Fendi skirt suit or Burberry baseball cap.

But, really, would you expect anything less from the daughter of Cindy Crawford (to whom she bears a double-take resemblance)? Sources say Kaia, who took summer school classes to make up for the time she’d lost studying over fashion month, is sweet, grounded and professional. Expect her reign to continue in 2018.

PLUS WE’RE ALL CRAZY FOR KAIA
