- LETTER OF THE WEEK PUTTING THE PLANET FIRST

I felt it was important to express my support for ‘I won’t have children

because of climate change’ (11 Dec). I don’t discuss this view – which I share – as I think others will get angry/defensive. I don’t want to tell anyone how many children to have, but believe it is the single biggest thing anyone can do to reduce individual environmental impact. I have taken the decision as an empowering choice. While having children is still presented as the ‘valid’ or ‘natural’ choice, my view can be difficult to hear and discuss. But the only way to change that is to talk about it. Thank you for giving me more courage to discuss my choice openly. Jayne

# WOMEN SPREAD THE LOVE

May I commend you on your 11 December issue. I thoroughly enjoyed every article (I read every single word!), browsing fashion pages and suggested Chrissy presents. I photographed and sent the Le Petit Trou lingerie body to my 19-year-old daughter – who refuses to wear a bra – and this is now on the Christmas list. We discussed #Womenspreading, at which both of us laughed as we’re sure she is, in fact, the original founder! Stephanie

THE CHAIN GANG

I thoroughly enjoyed Molten

magic! (4 Dec), which perfectly explored chain-mail’s warrior goddess associations, from the space-age trend of the ’60s to the iconic Versace S/S ’18 show. This article immaculately illustrated the themes of the issue: ending the year on a note of female empowerment (and a joining of forces in a #metoo age), excess and immodesty, and a celebration of confidence. It’s a fabric with a purpose to fulfil:

WAGING WAR!

In ‘ We need women’s quotas in

Hollywood’ (11 Dec) you note that 14 men earned more than Emma Stone, the highest-paid actress. In the same issue, you wrote that the next season of

Big Little Lies is being held up because of the cast’s ‘soaring salary expectations’, claiming they’re ‘throwing their weight around’. I’m curious: how do the salaries of these women – all the cast members blamed are women – compare with those of men on similarly successful shows? I think we can imagine. Charlotte
