Time to become a TWAT?

Lucy Vine is living the dream of city and country living – so you can call her what you like!

I AM A TWAT – there, I said it, and I don’t care who knows. Last week, Georgia ‘ Toff ’ Toffolo put a name to something I’ve been blithely doing for the last few months, not knowing I was part of a hot new trend. The I’m A Celeb winner – with a confidence only wealthy 23-year-olds could ever possess – asked, ‘Are you a TWAT?’ Explaining the new term: ‘It means Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays spent in London, and the rest of the week in the country.’

I’ve been doing just that. I bought a dog and, like a desperate single parent afraid to be left alone with her offspring (said dog), I gravitated towards my family in the Cambridgeshire countryside. After 15 years of city life, I bought a tiny cottage in a tiny village. Thanks to friends’ sofas, I spend my TWATS in London, working and socialising, and long weekends in the country, walking along the river and having coffee with my mum and sisters. My Instagram is all sunsets and fields one minute, tequila shots and skyscrapers the next. I’m greedy for both lives and I’ll do both, adopting whatever offensive nickname comes with it. Friends are getting in on it too, with flexi time allowing them three days of commuting and two working from bed.

I worry that we can’t be TWATS forever. When I can no longer rely on friends’ hospitality, I’ll have to re-evaluate. But, until then, let’s all embrace being TWATS. Lucy’s second novel, ‘ What Fresh Hell’ (£8.99, Orion), is out 8 March
