LONG LIVE SPICE STYLE!

-

From the glimpse we saw, the Spice Girls in 2018 is a masterclass in inoffensive, join-the-dots good taste (see roll necks, expensive handbags and lots of black). So why did their first appearance together in years feel – from a fashion perspective, at least – so meh? Well, because the Spice Girls in their original, zeitgeist-defining glory were a rip-roaring, high-kicking, tongue-poking celebration of the very best of bad taste. The original ‘man repelling’ dressers, their aesthetic lived outside the male gaze. Each Spice’s look, while wildly different in style, was united in the same attitude: ‘I will wear whatever the hell I want.’ If that was a Liverpool shirt or little black dress didn’t matter.

It’s a captivating sentiment, which is why, once again, fashion is borrowing from the ’90s and the Spice Girls’ most iconic looks. The fab five might be favouring inoffensively chic knitwear for now, but you can still dress up as your favourite Spice. Time to dust off those Buffalos…

If S/S ’18 belongs to one Spice, it’s Mel C. Sports luxe is in a league of its own right now.

The grown-up version of a bum-grazing Union Jack dress is S/S ’18’s no-holdsbarred sequins.

The golden rule for being Baby? Short, sweet and in any colour so long as it’s pink.

As fierce as ever, Scary’s lairy animal prints are elevated with a new sophistication. Miaow.

VB’S LBDS were great then, and they’re still great now. Ditch the finger point, though.
