BREAKING NEWS: contouring isn’t the only technique in town for sculpting cheekbones and adding definition to your face. In a refreshing move, this season’s make-up mavens are throwing it back to the ’80s (with a modern twist, of course) by subtly sculpting the face with a swipe of an old favourite – blush.

The most prominent label leading the way back to blush is Chanel, where legendary make-up artist Tom Pecheux teamed hot pink rosy cheeks with clashing teal eyeshadow and glossy red lips – yes, all at the same time. Don’t be scared, it can be done (although having an expert make-up artist on hand certainly helps). Elsewhere, Bora Aksu went down the bold-is-better route for a prettifying flush, while models at Puma Fenty sported a swirl of iridescent peach placed high on the cheekbones and temples, for an instant lifting effect.

Finally, make-up messiah Pat Mcgrath firmly sealed the deal at Valentino, using the classic ‘ blush draping’ technique made famous in the ’60s by iconic makeup artist Way Bandy. Just like the ‘drape’ that graced the faces of everyone from Cher to Diana Ross during that decade, Mcgrath expertly crafted a pink-ombré blush along the highs of the cheekbones and across the brow bones and temples.

Has the constant stream of expertly chiselled cheekbones across Instagram caused the revolt? Sascha Jackson, Stila UK’S lead pro- artist, believes the new blush revolution has been triggered by something different entirely: ‘Its re- emergence is the result of our current dedication to all things wellness.’ So it goes back to that age- old equation: rosy cheeks = instant youthful glow. Here’s how to work it like a pro…
