BRING YOUR HOLIDAY

-

RARE IS THE person who’s immune to the charms of the impulsive holiday purchase. But the truth is, of course, these beachside buys hardly ever translate to real life when you’re back home. It’s one thing convincing yourself you’ll ‘wear it all the time’ when the sand’s beneath your feet and the ocean’s twinkling in the background, it’s quite another to actually pop on a kaftan or a pair of those fishermen’s trousers you bulk bought in Krabi to do the weekly shop. Like all holiday romances, the magic disappears as soon as you land at the airport. The grim inevitability is that all those things you snapped up on a giddy wave of optimism will stay stowed away in a case all year round. How depressing.

And yet, this year there is a way to bring that holiday spirit back home – or, to your wardrobe at least. Introducing the homeand-away wardrobe, holiday clothes that actually work for real life. These pieces masquerade as discoveries unearthed on far-flung travels, but that can be snapped up right here, right now. Think sarong skirts that are also (shocker!) safe for work, think candy-hued denim that looks as good with a fine knit as it does a vest, think colourful beaded jewellery that brings a blast of sunshine to any look.

You can thank Simon Porte Jacquemus, the French designer enjoying a stellar summer, for propelling the popularity of the home-and-away wardrobe with his S/S ’18 Jacquemus collection, a paean to the sun-drenched South of France. Comprising baked terracottas and sandy shades, shirting and dresses that tumble off the shoulders, crafty jewellery and Insta-bait sunhats, these pieces induce palpable wanderlust in the wearer. Yes, they would be at home in Cannes or Saint Tropez, but worn, as Jacquemus suggests, with pared-back pieces (a minimal sandal here, a sleek hairband there) they’ll still be going long after your tan.

Here are the five pieces that bring vacation vibes to your wardrobe – whether you’re actually going anywhere or not.
