THE ARTIST’S GIFT

ARTIST JO BARRETT credits receiving creative gifts when she was a young child as nurturing her interest in art. ‘Everyone knew I was really into drawing, painting, sewing, knitting etc, so it was an obvious choice of gift for me,’ she says. ‘I loved getting art materials and craft books from the age of about four. And then, when I was five or six, I remember I painted a baker in front of a row of shelves with buns and loaves on. Everyone was so impressed and my mum framed it and hung it in our home.’

The inspiring gifts kept coming. When Jo was a little older, she was given an easel, canvasses and paints as a present, so she could set up a little studio within her bedroom. Jo’s mum was artistic herself, often doing watercolour paintings that inspired her daughter. ‘I knew by 14 or 15 that I wanted to go to art school and pursue a career in art. I’ve been very lucky,’ says Jo, who is now a highly successful minimalist still-life artist, who exhibits in both the UK and New York. Gifts have also played a part in her work – ‘My husband bought me a beautiful ginger jar that has appeared in many paintings!’

As someone who has benefited from well-thought-out presents, Jo is very aware of the power of a gift. ‘I love buying my friends’ children creative gifts as you never know when someone who has a passion for art could use a little encouragement. A membership to the Tate would be an ideal gift, along with some life drawing classes.’

And if anyone wants to know what to buy Jo this year? ‘I love a surprise; I’m always so touched when someone buys me a gift they have put thought into. I still love receiving sketch books and stylish pens and pencils. A great gift would be a really reliable radio so I can listen while I’m working or a neat little camera to snap anything that inspires me when I’m out and about. Oh, and all artists need a hand cream for our hard-working hands! Also on my wish list is a new watch so I don’t lose track of time when I’m working. As I’m often on the go, a bag for my make-up and bits and bobs would be lovely too!’ Find the gift that helps them find their gift at very.co.uk.
