LETTER OF THE WEEK HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY

The statement ‘tell them yesterday’ (‘ At 13, my parents told me I was a sperm donor baby’, 4 Feb) resonated with me. I told my son about our sperm donor from the very start. I made a scrapbook about the journey, how a very special person gave me some ‘fairy dust’ to help the egg grow inside me. As he is getting older we are explaining everything in more detail. We talk about his features, hair colour, eye colour and discuss what might come from me and what might come from his donor. We talk openly and positively. I urge anyone using donor sperm or egg donations to be honest with their child. It is not, after all, something to be ashamed of. My child is beautiful, confident and proud of who he is and I wouldn’t change him or how he came about. Amanda

KEEP THAT APPOINTMENT

I was captivated by ‘I missed my smear tests. Now I’m infertile’ (28 Jan). At 32, I fell pregnant with my daughter. After three months of bleeding and quite gloomy forecasts for my unborn baby’s health, we were finally told she was in fact totally fine – but that I may have cancer. It’s all a blur now, but it was so hard not knowing what would happen and undergoing so many appointments. Thankfully, soon after she was born I got the all-clear. Although I was terrified throughout, I clung on to the knowledge I was up to date with my smears and told myself it had to be OK. Smears are definitely no trip to the spa, and for me had always been uncomfortable and dreaded, but I now go with a smile on my face and feel grateful for the chances we have that women before us didn’t. Thank you for sharing such an important and heart-wrenching story. Kathy

NO- CASH FASH

Loved Rebecca Lowthorpe’s article on sustainability ( Spring/summer 2019 starts here!, 28 Jan). It inspired me to write my own blog ‘My No Spend February Style Challenge’. Oncel

BATHTIME BLISS

What a brilliant spot-on article ( So working mums are 40% more stressed…, 11 Feb). I read it while soaking in the bath trying to de-stress from juggling a job, the school run, my 10-year-old daughter, the dog, the untidy house, is the tea ready… The article made me laugh, then cry, then feel a million times better knowing I’m not alone and I’m not cracking up... Thank you Fiona Cowood, from a very frazzled 43-year-old. Karen The letter of the week wins a luxury skincare duo from Kat Burki worth £248. Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream deeply nourishes and protects skin, while Rose Hip Revitalising Serum defends skin against free radicals and the signs of ageing. Visit katburki.com
