Adele, we want Someone Like You at every wedding!

-

WE’VE ALL GOT that one friend who livens up a party with their antics and sparky attitude. For a lucky few, that friend is the sensationally talented, hilariously slapstick and Grammy award-winning singer Adele. Last week, the superstar stole the show at her best friend’s wedding, firstly by officiating the nuptials, then belting out her classics (namely Rolling In The Deep) and delivering a feverish rendition of Spice Up Your Life. The wedding, which was between her oldest friend Laura Dockrill and The Maccabees’ Hugo White, also saw the star perform an adorable duet with her BFF at The Mason’s Arms pub in Battersea, south-west London.

Adele met Laura during her time at London’s performing arts academy, The BRIT School. Since then, they’ve been close through thick and thin. When Laura experienced postpartum psychosis – an ordeal that has inspired a forthcoming book – she credits Adele with spotting the signs. ‘She recognised it in me,’ she says. ‘I was on the phone, Facetiming her, and she was the first one to detect what I might have.’ Last summer, the pair were together at Wembley for the Spice Girls’ reunion tour.

Nonetheless, it was a surprise last week when Adele, wearing an Oscar de la Renta skirt, made a stab at karaoke. ‘Everyone was a bit starstruck when she joined the band on stage for an impromptu performance,’ a friend said. ‘She made everyone laugh and was lovely to absolutely everyone,’ they continued, adding that the singer has stayed close to all of her London friends. ‘She may have all of her Hollywood connections, but she’s still very much rooted in her hometown.’

The singer spent the evening joking on stage, nonchalantly revealing that her much-anticipated next album is coming out in September. She also became extremely excited when she heard Beyoncé’s Crazy In Love come on after her set.

But this isn’t the first time Adele has made an impression at her friends’ nuptials. She is, history would suggest, the best celebrity wedding guest of all time.

In 2018, the singer got ordained so she could organise, oversee and perform at Alan Carr’s wedding to Paul Drayton in LA. She married the couple – who she calls her ‘two best friends’ – in her Californian back garden, planning the entire operation, from the rose-covered walls to the classical pianist. According to Alan, who was talking last week on The Graham Norton Show, the singer wore religious robes, sang the couple’s first dance song live, and was meticulous about the finer details. ‘She wanted everything to be perfect,’ the Chatty Man host said, revealing that Adele even halted the ceremony when a lawn mower interrupted the vows. After telling the guests to ‘wait a moment’, she accosted the gardener, telling him she would ‘mow the lawn herself tomorrow, but today it stops!’.

‘It was absolutely amazing,’ he added. ‘It was the best day of my life. This is what Adele is like – she’s a superstar.’ She then picked up the tab for absolutely everything and, if that wasn’t enough, flew the newlyweds to Vegas to see Celine Dion.

If only every bride could find someone like her...
