Grazia beauty school: how to master a berry lip

-

AH, LONG-LASTING LIPSTICK . The elusive holy grail of mouth make-up that has been historically hard to master. If you prioritised longevity, you had to compromise on comfort. If you favoured a balmier finish, you had to accept chalky matte was your only way to go. Not any more – thankfully, formulas have caught up, providing colour that stays put. That sorted, shade choice comes into play. We’re vouching for all things berry. ‘I always find berry tones to be defining – because of the depth of the colour – and also quite striking, especially if there is little make-up on the rest of the face,’ says pro make-up artist Andrew Gallimore. Too intense for you? ‘Just find the right tone, depth of shade and formulation that suits you,’ advises Andrew. Here’s how…

1. PRIME FIRST

Preparation is key. ‘I always prep the lip before applying any colour. Remove any dry skin with an exfoliating scrub and nourish with a balm. I really like the Kiko Gentle Lip Scrub, £4.99, in lipstick form,’ says Andrew.

2. TIME TO LINE

For added depth and longevity, use a liner pre-lipstick. ‘Depending on the desired final look, lipliner can help create an even, sharp, defined lip line resulting in a bolder lip. A light sketch of the pencil over the whole lip will form a longer lasting layer to help your product stay put all day.’

3. COLOUR IN

‘There are so many incredible products out there that you don’t need to do extra steps like powdering through a tissue. Just pick a long-wear formula such as NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment in Rock With You, £23, for a deep berry lip that lasts.’

4. BLOT AND GO

‘Try the age-old finger between the lips trick (creating an “O” shape with your lips), to catch any extra pigment. Finally, if the formula needs it, blot with a tissue and you’re good to go.’
