Renovate your bedroom

Let’s renovate!

WHEN KIMBERLY DURAN

and her partner Wayne bought this four-bedroom Victorian semi in Shrewsbury, they knew they would have to embark on a major renovation. ‘The house was dated and neglected,’ says the stylist behind @swoonworthyblog, ‘but we could see that it had enormous potential to be a beautiful home. It had many original features, including the cornicing and floor tiles and big bay windows that brought in the light.’ The first room to be transformed was this bedroom. ‘We wanted a sanctuary, somewhere we could shut the door and leave the mess and chaos behind,’ says Kimberly.

ELECTRIC DREAMS

The bedroom needed to be rewired. ‘The walls were not in great shape anyway – one had been a gallery wall and was full of holes and old nails.’

DIY DRAWERS

‘The bedside tables are an Ikea hack. I painted the Rast drawers (£25, ikea.co.uk) black and bought the campaign hardware on ebay and at B&Q.’

SUITE SUCCESS

‘The bedroom now leads into a dressing room and office, and Wayne has the same, so each of us has a lovely suite of rooms,’ says Kimberly.

FEELING FLAKY

‘We had to scrape all the old paint off and then skim the walls [add a thin layer of plaster]. Luckily, the original floorboards were in good condition.’

METALLIC TOUCH

In one corner is a vintage chest of drawers, bought on ebay for £75. ‘On it are objects in gold, which is the accent metallic in the bedroom – and the entire house.’

BANISH PINK!

Although Kimberly liked the original pink walls, Wayne did not – so they had to go. They were replaced by soothing white. ‘And I’m going to replace the pink curtains with grey.’

JUNGLE FEVER

‘I had long lusted after a monochrome wall mural and love this for its vintage style (£33/m2, rebelwalls.com/uk). It has a lot of movement, but is not so busy it overwhelms the space.’

ROSE BED

‘I wanted a bed with a wraparound headboard, and rose is a wonderful neutral shade (for similar, see Margot, from £599, made.com). I didn’t tell Wayne – I prefer to ask forgiveness, not permission!’
