Why we’re still crazy about Friends fashion

-

The Friends reunion has only just been announced but, in fashion land, the influence of Rachel, Monica and Phoebe’s wardrobes never really went away. Because, seriously, could the clothes be any better? Straight-leg jeans, sweatshirts, slip dresses, knee-high boots – all worn with the kind of West Village cool that they brew at Central Perk – are as worthy of an ‘Oh. My. God.’ now as they were in 1994. Today’s fashionable folk look like they’ve been watching Netflix’s reruns religiously. Here are the outfits they’ve bookmarked…

TRUE BLUES

Just as ‘Joey doesn’t share food!’, Rachel doesn’t wear anything but straight when it comes to jeans. Put down the skinnies and, like Bella Hadid, opt for a high-waisted shape that stops just below the ankle.

TEAM PLAYER

Whether or not you think the Knicks rule, you can still wear the merch for mooching around at home if you’re Rachel. In 2020, you’ll find Hailey Bieber styling college sweats with a tailored blazer.

POWER OF FOUR

It takes just four elements to make an off-duty look this cool. Whether you’re Kendall Jenner or Monica, all it requires is a black top, a cardigan/jacket, some straight jeans and a pair of black ankle boots.

CARDI QUEENS

The cardigan has finally found its sexy side – and you have Monica to thank. The trend for leaving several buttons undone has found a fan club in It girls like Kaia Gerber. If your belly button is off-limits, avoid low-slung styles.

FURRY FRIEND

Phoebe apologised to a squirrel after wearing a mink coat so rest-assured this tangerine coat is of the faux variety. In 2020, she would probably buy hers from Shrimps and style it with a dark polo neck, à la Sienna Miller.

CHECKMATE CHIC

The gingham shift dress will always be a hit, whether it comes sans sleeves, like Rachel’s, or with a puff like Beanie Feldstein’s. The former probably styled hers with chunky mules, but two-strap sandals feels right for now.
