ALBUMS 8. O’FLYNN – ALETHEIA

- BY ACTING DEPUTY EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN GUIDE KATHRYN BROMWICH

1. TYLER, THE CREATOR – FLOWER BOY

A drive through LA at sunset you can safely enjoy from your own home, this concept album sees Tyler tackle themes of personal growth and self-acceptance via a series of car-based metaphors and banging tunes. Watch out for those potholes.

2. PRINCESS NOKIA – EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL / EVERYTHING SUCKS

We could all do with some of Destiny Frasqueri’s unshakeable self-belief and no-nonsense attitude. These two new albums – one mellow, one pugnacious – will complement your mood, whether you’re relaxing on the sofa or getting embroiled in a Twitter spat.

3. LIZZO – CUZ I LOVE YOU

Sometimes you just need to turn Juice right up and dance around the kitchen singing as loud as you can. This is one of those times. If you need something more chill, Lizzo is currently offering anxiety-calming flute meditations on Instagram.

4. BLACK PUMAS – BLACK PUMAS

Just some smooth, smooth soul from this under-appreciated Texas-based duo. Lose yourself in their debut album’s standout tracks Black Moon Rising and Colors while you sit back and savour a glass of bourbon.

5. LANA DEL REY – NORMAN FUCKING ROCKWELL!

If you’re feeling melodramatic, now is the perfect time to wallow in Lana Del Rey’s world – her tales of decadence and woe have never sounded more appealing.

6. RIHANNA – ANTI

Right about now would be a pretty great time for Ri-ri to drop her ninth album, but for now we’ll have to make do with her last. And what an album it is: sexy and fierce.

7. WEYES BLOOD – TITANIC RISING

As soundtracks to the apocalypse go, this is one of the most beautiful. Natalie Mering’s ode to a world doomed by catastrophic climate change feels even more potent now

Sunny outside? Stick on this Afro-tinged house record from London producer Ben Norris and pretend you’re at a festival. Pass that warm can of Red Stripe.

9. KELSEY LU – BLOOD

Not enough people heard this stunning record when it came out last year, so now is the time to catch up. The classically trained cellist and Solange collaborator creates spellbinding, haunting melodies.

10. CATS: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

Yes, the songs are weird and confusing and, apart from Memory, just not very good, but the soundtrack to Tom Hooper’s sinister feline flick will keep you distracted from everything else.
