Force of nature
Rachna Garodia makes wall art and screens combining weaving and hand-embroidery with foraged flora.
What’s your backstory? I specialised in weaving for a post-graduate degree in textile design. My final project, shown at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai, was a sell-out; that was the starting point. I moved to London because of my husband’s work; after a break to have children, I started weaving again three years ago.
Where do you work? From a shared studio in west London. I weave on frame looms; my table loom has moved various countries, homes and studios with me.
What inspires you? Nature. My first steps towards designing a new collection begin with walks along the river or in green spaces – as an artist, forager and weaver, I draw all my inspiration from its earthy, coarse and unrefined aesthetic. I organise, clean and treat my foraged finds before I incorporate them into my weaves. I love it! rachnagarodia.com; @rachnagarodia
