Transform your bathroom

-

NOT JUST FOR washing, the bathroom is also where we like to de-stress in a relaxing froth of bubbles – and during lockdown, for many it was the only place that offered a private space for some desperately needed me-time. A dated and cluttered room, however, makes it impossible to really unwind. If yours needs a makeover, here’s how to elevate it to the most chilled space in your home...

PRISTINE PAINTWORK Make sure the steaminess of your bathroom doesn’t lead to mouldy paintwork, which will wreck any feelgood vibe. ‘Look for mould-resistant emulsions that include fungicide,’ says Natasha Bradley from Lick Home. ‘In terms of finish, we recommend a durable matt for bathroom ceilings. You want something that’s highly opaque and washable.’

FLOOR SHOW Patterned tiles are a great way to get a designer look without having to spend big. A simple but effective way to use them is on the floor; team them with plain walls, either painted or in a solid coloured tile (Metro tiles work brilliantly). Check out the useful ‘how-to guides’ at wickes.co.uk.

TUB TALK

A bathtub that is large and curvy enough to easily sink into is key to a spa feel. A freestanding tub is super-luxe but does take up more space than a built-in one. If you go for the latter, style it up with cladding or tiles. Using the same tiles as the floor gives a seamless look and a more spacious feel in a small room. A double-ended bath looks more elegant than one with taps at one end.

CLEAR THE DECKS Being able to hide away bathroom paraphernalia is vital for a serene vibe, so get in as much storage as possible. Options include setting your basin within a row of cupboards or drawers or, if you don’t have the space, choose a basin with a storage unit, rather than a pedestal one – it’s amazing how much you can squeeze into a couple of drawers. In a narrow space, use the height of your wall for a slim but tall cabinet, and choose a mirrored cabinet over a flat mirror.

SHED SOME LIGHT The loveliest bathrooms now include decorative as well as functional lighting. ‘Good ambient lighting creates a lovely, indulgent atmosphere,’ says Rohan Blacker, founder of Pooky. ‘You can use decorative lighting to make your bathroom stylish, just as you do in your sitting room.’ You do, though, need to follow the regulations that govern bathrooms. Lighting comes with IP ratings and those in areas close to water sources need to have a rating of IP44 or above; away from splash zones there is more flexibility. So do your research.

MIRROR IMAGE

If you can get your storage elsewhere and don’t need a mirrored cabinet, choose a statement mirror that will make your bathroom feel more warm and glamorous. Remember, lights on either side are more flattering and properly illuminate your face compared to those placed above or overhead.

ADD ACCESSORIES Decant soap, shampoo and other lotions and potions into stylish dispensers – it’s a small change that packs a design punch. Similarly, invest in a bathtub tray – perfect for holding a glass of wine and book. Don’t forget a scented candle.

GREEN YOUR SPACE Indoor plants can make a huge difference, adding texture and relaxing shades of green. The bathroom is ideal for humidity-loving plants: ‘Try Dracena, Boston fern, ZZ plant, spider plant, aloe vera and hanging philodendron,’ say Grace & Thorn’s Nik Southern.
