How to transform a space with paint

Chris Moorhouse from Wickes gives his tips on choosing the perfect paint shade

It is easier to find a paint colour that goes with your furniture than to find furniture that matches your paint, so choose furniture first and go from there.

For small or dark rooms, white and pale neutrals, such as Wickes Pebble Grey Tough & Washable Emulsion, reflect the most light, giving the impression of a bigger, airier room. The direction your room faces is also key to choosing paint colour. Northfacing rooms receive cooler and harsher light, and east-facing rooms are bright earlier on but become cooler as the day progresses, so use warm colours to make them feel welcoming. South-facing rooms get warm, colour-flattering light all day and west-facing rooms become warmer as the day progresses, so both benefit from cooler shades.

For rooms used mostly in the evening, think about the impact of artificial light on paint colours. Halogen bulbs make colours look warmer than they appear in daylight. Modern LED lights, specifically warm white LEDS, will better complement paint colours.

Use the right paint type for the room. Low-traffic areas, such as living rooms and bedrooms, can take a more decorative finish. For high-traffic areas, like hallways, opt for an acrylic-based paint, such as one from the Wickes Tough & Washable range. For kitchens and bathrooms, use paint that’s made for these rooms. Bathroom paint, for example, has a soft sheen finish and properties that don’t allow mould or condensation to stick.

Finally, if you’re revamping a room, take a look at the Wickes Paint Selector Tool – it can help you choose the shades that are right for your rooms.
