The experts at Wickes share their step-by-step guide on how to design a stylish feature wall

Creating a gallery wall has become one of the big trends of lockdown and is an easy but stylish way to transform a blank wall into a lovely feature, adding colour, character and a graphic element to a room.

Begin by piecing together a collection of photographs, artwork or prints. Don’t rush into buying a range of prints in one go; instead build your collection up over time. Try developing a theme, whether that be colour, subject or media.

Size up your available space and measure it, making a note of an approximate eye-level measurement from the floor. Don’t be afraid to use the entire wall, working from floor to ceiling for full effect.

Next, decide on a layout – a mock-up on the wall using templates made out of paper is a good idea initially, as it allows you to have a play around with various placements and positions to ensure you’re happy. Use your eye level measurement taken earlier as a starting point.

Odd or even? For a more casual effect, an odd number of prints in different sizes works well; for a cleaner effect, opt for an even number of prints. When you are happy with the layout, decide on the frames – do you want them to be uniform in colour size and style, or an eclectic mix?

Once your artwork is ready to hang, you need to get your tools – picture hooks, hammer, spirit level, pencil, rubber, ruler and wall filler (in case of mistakes). If you’re renting, use Wickes’ double picture hooks or Command picture hanging strips as these won’t damage the wall.

Mark lightly on the walls where the top corners of the frame will be, and measure and mark how much lower down you will need your picture hook holes. Start hammering and remember to use a spirit level to make sure everything is straight.
