Gearing up for Grimsby Club Championship

- By TONY BURMAN a.burman@ntlworld.com @GrimsbyLive

THE meeting ahead of this year’s Grimsby-area Club Championship takes place on Wednesday in the car park at Ultimate Angling, Holton-le-Clay, from 7pm.

There has been a little confusion over why we have asked for £200 to be paid at the meeting. This is to cover the team fee and includes the pegging fees. It also covers the individual pools. With the current situation, we do not want to be collecting any money on the day of the match. If any club wants to fish and cannot pay the full £200 next week, let us know at the meeting. Also if you want to fish but cannot send a representative to the meeting, let Tim Chapman or myself know as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please ring me on 07847272237. The match is at Lindholme, and all the lakes will be used except Benny’s. But we need to know how many teams are taking part.

One of the bigger clubs in the area, Claytons, were originally entering three teams, but it is now in doubt whether they are going to enter any. According to match manager Steve Crosskill, this is due to many of the members being at an older age and they are unsure about fishing in the current climate. It is hoped that some of the younger members will form a team. Other clubs have not held any matches this year so they may not be in position to get a team together. It is still hoped that we will get more than 14 teams taking part. Meanwhile, Claytons Angling Club fished at Messingham Lakes last Saturday on Island Lake. Pegs 21 to 49 were used.

Runaway winner was Thomas Everett with 159lb 5oz. Section winners were Steve Parker with 96lb 5oz,

David Shreeve (by default as he was in Tom’s section) with 89lb 4oz and Tim Chapman with 97lb 1oz.

Claytons also held their first Friday night match. Conditions were more like October than July with the gale force wind and rain.

Tim Chapman was the winner from peg 10 with 35lb 1oz ahead of Jim Fletcher and Sam Smith.

Westlands AC fished at Hayfield Lakes, Doncaster, for the The Melly Cox Trophy on a wild and windy day.

The winner was Andy ‘Chipper’ Bryant with 133lb to claim the trophy. Second place went to James Phillipson on peg 44 with a total of 116lb 9oz. Wayne Bell, on peg 41, amassed 97lb 3oz to take third.

In a match at Habrough Country Park, in first place, fishing from peg 23, was Mark Tuppen with 55lb 12oz. In second was Bill Burnett, fishing from peg 19 with 53lb8oz ahead of thirdplaced Frank Gowen (peg 15) with 49lb 8oz.

On to the sea fishing, and this weekend sees the Smooth Hound Open with already more than 50 anglers booked in. But there has been a major problem - anglers have been struggling to get hold of peeler crab.

Supplies of the bait have been exceptionally scarce this year. I do not know the reason. I spoke to a bait dealer in Essex and he would normally have had more than 25,000 crab by this time of the season - this year he has just had around 1,000. It seems to be a nationwide problem.

A match was held on the Courtaulds stretch of the Humber, and it was hard going.

Top man was Jack Barlow with six fish for 154cm ahead of Stephen Mcgregor with four fish for 92cm and Paul Denholm with four fish for 83cm.

The same trio figured in the latest Friends Fishing Club match on the shallows stretch of the Humber Bank wall. First in was Paul Denholm, ahead Steve McGregor and Jack Barlow.
